Music Video Research

In my previous filming project, not everything went as smoothly as expected. My partner and I made a few mistakes that we had to learn from. I learned to manage my time better because some things went wrong that probably could've been prevented if I used my time wisely. I also learned that you can always find a way to get things done if you look hard enough. We had multiple days to edit our commercial, but on almost every single one of those days we faced some sort of technical difficulties resulting in my editing the commercial at home. I also need to plan more efficiently so the process of filming can run smoothly. I can use everything I learned from this previous project to film my music video better and be more productive.

We chose the song "Diva," by Beyonce. It's video was published on YouTube a little over 10 years ago. This 2009 song is considered a contemporary R&B song. We decided to with this song because its sassy just like us. It beat out our other Beyonce and Lizzo song because of how much it reminded us of our younger selves. We knew we wanted to do something a little on the older side. We just browsed through Apple Music and found this song and we knew it was the one.

Majority of contemporary rap I've seen is by female artists. They're either pretty sassy or a bit more romantic and emotional. The costumes for the sassier videos are more revealing and are beaming with crystals and jewels. The lighting tends to be really bright and flashy as well. Their acting is extremely confident and empowering. The props and setting are usually not overbearing because you're focused way more on the artist. These videos include a lot of complimenting angles like low angles, extreme close ups and more. You also see many tracking shots and movements that move with the artists. The costumes for the more raw and emotional videos tend to be more plain, and more romantic. The lighting is a lot softer and more dimmed. The acting is definitely toned down to meet the more romantic feeling of the songs. Characters are usually stationed in one place for these more romantic videos either in a shower, bathtub, bed etc. The props are usually a lot nicer and it compliments the artists instead of having you focus solely on the artists like the sassier videos do. The angles for these videos are a lot simpler in my opinion. The angles are usually medium close ups with minimal movements tracking movements.
