Camera angles (CAMS)
- Establishing shot to show how remotely the main character is living
- Extreme close-ups of everything the main character is doing contribute to our understanding of how different everyday actions are for someone who can’t hear
- Constant close-ups throughout the movie highlight the disorientation of the main character
Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS)
- Grayish lighting give it a slightly ominous feel but not exactly scary
- Lighting gets a little more soft and homey but still eerie
- The main character being deaf really exaggerates the scene where her best friend is being stabbed to death and screaming for help
- The setting being during night time contributes to the eerie mood
- Darkness contributes to the eerie mood
Editing
- The constant cuts between the POV of the main character and the killer
Elements of the genre
Sounds
- Emphasis on sounds at the beginning of the movie to bring attention to the main character’s deafness when the sounds cut off
- The light music makes the main characters life seem calm and normal
- The switch between sound and lack thereof highlights the main character’s point of view in contrast with her hearing counterparts
- Crescendos intensify dramatic moments.
What elements do you like
- Great use of color and light to create a slightly desperate and disturbed mood
What elements do you dislike
- I feel like there was a lack of exposition about the murderer’s character
